10 Summer Skin care tips
As the temperatures rise and days lengthen into balmy, summer nights, we can’t forget that our skin and it’s needs also change with the seasons. Yes, the warmer weather is a total relief from the dry, cold winter weather, but it comes with its own set of challenges that need to be tamed! Below are our tips for your Summer Skincare routine.
1) Ramp up the SPF
Don’t underestimate the power of the sun and sun damage to your skin! You should really be wearing SPF all year round – and no, the SPF in your foundation isn’t enough to protect your gorgeous skin! Forget the SPF 15 and use a lightweight, dedicated facial sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30, and don’t forget to re-apply!
2) Stash Some Skincare in the Fridge
Trust me, there is nothing better on a hot, summer day than using a fresh, super cold sheet mask or a cool serum. They’re the perfect pick me up and are also amazing for soothing and calming down skin that’s irritated from the sun.
3) Swap Out Your Moisturiser
Your skin in the summer won’t be as thirsty for moisture as it was in the winter, so swap out your regular moisturiser for a lightweight gel moisturiser or serum with ingredients like hyaluronic acid or collagen. Your skin will thank you!
4) Use a Facial Roller
Keeping an ice roller or jade roller on hand in the freezer is perfect for cooling down overheated skin, and minimising any puffy under eyes caused by the heat – the perfect way to end a hot, summer day.
5) Don’t Forget After-Sun Care
Always keep some aloe vera gel, or even better an aloe vera plant around to help soothe skin that’s been in the sun too long!
6) Use a Clay Mask
Clay masks instantly halt oily skin or any excess oil production that might be coming through because of the warmer weather – keeping your skin shine-free and flawless. An oil-free face is also way less likely to melt off any makeup in the heat!
7) Protect Your Skin With Antioxidants
An antioxidant serum is the best way to protect skin from harmful free radicals that can accelerate the signs of ageing – some superstar antioxidant ingredients include Vitamin C and Resveratrol.
8) Exfoliate Regularly
Exfoliating is key for halting any hot weather-induced breakouts in their tracks, as well as keeping skin smooth and radiant all summer long. Oilier skin types should opt for exfoliants containing salicylic acid, while normal to dry skin types will reap the rewards of lactic or glycolic acid cleansers and toners – just don’t forget to protect your skin with SPF after!
9) Stay Super Hydrated
Hydration (inside and out) is so important for keeping your skin soft, naturally glowing, and healthy in any weather. Don’t forget to up your water intake, and keep a water-based refreshing mist on hand for your skin to drink up from time to time.
10) Wear a Wide-brimmed Hat
It’s old-school, but it works. The thing is, too much sun exposure isn’t just about sunburn – sunlight/UV rays has the power to darken hyperpigmentation, cause rosacea flare-ups, AND speed up the ageing process, making it so important to shield your skin in more ways than one. Sun protection is key!
